EXPERIENCE REPORT OF THE “BURNINGS PROJECT”: training, awareness and territorial knowledge at the state school in Ituiutaba-MG (2025)

Abstract

This article presents an experience report of an extension project developed within the scope of the Tutorial Education Program (PET) in 2025, entitled "(Re)connecting knowledge, skills and practices: towards conscious citizenship," at the Federal University of Uberlândia (UFU), in the city of Ituiutaba/MG. This report qualitatively addresses the project entitled "WILDFIRES: knowing to prevent," which carried out its practices at the Professora Maria de Barros State School with students from regular high school and adult education (EJA), discussing the topic and its nuances within the territory. The justification for carrying out this extension project arose from a fire in the Goiabal Municipal Park (Ituiutaba/MG), a place that shelters examples of the remaining Cerrado flora and wildlife, and is the subject of study for several courses at UFU – Pontal Campus. The main objective of this article is to present an experience report on the extension project and the actions developed that contributed to the training, awareness, and expansion of territorial knowledge of students at the Escola Estadual Professora Maria de Barros, in Ituiutaba/MG. The methodology of actions included: 1) a series of lectures held in the school environment; 2) dissemination of the project on a local/regional television channel; and 3) a guided trail in the Goiabal Municipal Park. The results obtained from the execution of the project show significant impacts in the educational, social, and environmental fields, strengthening interdisciplinary dialogue and collective commitment to environmental preservation.
