ARE SUSTAINABILITY PRACTICES IN COOPERATIVES A REFLECTION OF ITS UNIQUEITY?

Abstract
The objective of this theoretical essay is to explore the Strategy as Practice approach to understand how the characteristics of cooperative organizations influence the nature of their sustainability practices. The sustainability theme is not new in the corporate environment, but in recent years it has become an imperative issue in the development of organizational strategies. This reality is no different in cooperative organizations, what differs is their peculiar way of operating by principles that bring them closer to the main guidelines for sustainable development, which should place cooperatives in a prominent position on the sustainability agenda, a fact that does not occur. This essay demonstrates, through the Strategy as Practice approach, the driving and restrictive factors, referring to sustainability in cooperatives and, further, proposes that the 7th cooperative principle if put into practice, in its true meaning, can put cooperatives on paper protagonists of sustainable development.
