SOCIO-SPATIAL SEGREGATION AND URBAN VIOLENCE

Abstract
This article brings a bibliographic review on urban violence from the perspective of socio-spatial segregation.The text is divided into three parts: the first, provides a brief explanation of what urban socio-spatial segregation is and the ways in which it occurs.The second part deals with the situation of those who live in imposed segregation: the lower social strata are forced to live in irregular areas, with little access to the structure that the city offers, which is a factor that generates stigmas and violence, making that territorial segregation also becomes social. The last part of the article deals with segregation by choice, a situation of part of the upper classes of society, who, due to the growing fear of violence, choose to live in closed places surrounded by private security, as a rule, territories contemplated with the better infrastructure promoted by the government.
