Abstract
This article reviews the literature on the definition of sustainable development. We are interested in the historical period that includes its emergence in the 1970s and especially contemplates the United Nations Conferences of 1972, 1992, 2002 and 2012. The emergence of Sustainable Development as a political and social project has promoted great efforts to make a sustainable society viable from the demands, actions and negotiations held at the United Nations Conferences. With this context in view, our goal is to analyze how the holding of these Conferences broadened the world discussion on sustainable development, making it go beyond strictly environmental concerns to socio-political and economic concerns at all levels of the world system. (local, regional, national and international) in the transition to the post-Cold War period.
